Southern marsh orchis (or orchid) / Tegeirian y Gors / Orchis praetermissa
Flowers May - July
I must confess that I had great difficulty identifying this orchid, as there are many quite similar species and considerable variation in colour, shape and size within each species. Perhaps someone can put me right if I've got it wrong? The southern marsh orchis is fairly common in damp places in South Wales and southern England, not so common elsewhere in England, and is possibly not found at all in Scotland, unlike the northern marsh orchis. Whatever orchis this is, it grows in abundance in a few spots, including Parc Bryn Bach in Blaenau Gwent, where I photographed this specimen. Orchis is a Greek word meaning 'testicle' and refers to the shape of the root. |
