Avro Anson
Ansons and Dakotas flying over our garden on their way to and from RAF Hendon were a constant
feature of my childhood and they never ceased to be a great source of mystery and joy to me.
There are still quite a lot of Daks about, but I've not seen or heard an Anson for at least 40 years. I can still remember the distinctive sound of the Anson's two Armstrong-Whitley Cheetah engines and
I'd recognise them instantly if I heard them again. An aviation expert in Australia has informed me that there are still two in existence (in Australia and the USA) but they are no longer in flying condition, due to their wooden construction. This Anson was probably built in the 30s and photographed during the War. Below is the unmistakable silhouette. |
