Common milkwort / Malws / Hocys / Malva sylvestris (var)
Flowers July - September
Actually, this specimen is a garden variant of the 'true' common mallow, which has more deeply divided petals. It has established itself in the wild and is almost as widespread by roadsides and in waste places as its older cousin, but I found this specimen on the towpath of the Grand Union Canal in Leicestershire. I've included it because of my unusual attitude to escaped and introduced species, which is that if they have long since thoroughly adapted to life in the wild in Britain, they are now native species - not something the biodiversifiers wish to hear. |
