Woody nightshade / Bittersweet / Codwarth caled / Elinog / Solanum dulcamara
Flowers June-September
This woody plant, which straggles its way up through hedgerows, is closely related to the potato, pepper, aubergine and chili, as can be seen from the flowers. Despite that, it's poisonous (though not as poisonous as its cousin deadly nightshade). It is found in most parts of Britain, in hedges, woods and on the edges of cultivated land. I think I found this specimen in a wood in Leicestershire. |
