Underne alumnus John Bibby, the first ever contributor to this site, has celebrated the 10th anniversary of that first message of his by compiling a handy summary of all the following scattered info ...

Mike Hagger is able to date the photo to no later than the Summer of '61, as he is in it and he left that year. The only other possible date is the early Autumn of 1960. As Mike says, all of us from that era should be able to recognize the two masters in the middle - John 'Poker' Pearce and Richard 'Rastus' Dilley. He says that to the right of the masters (as you look at it) is TORJ Herbert. In the same row, he also recognizes Tim Dunningham (5th from the end, wearing glasses).

To the left of J Pearce, he recognises Dave Hills (7 across - glasses and 'Prince Charles' ears) and Martin Iller on the end. At Martin's shoulder is Timmy Swann. Mike himself is fifth from the left of JP.

Derek White suggests the following additional names:

2nd Row seated, L-R:

1 Iller, 3 Honeybone, 4 Hills,  6 Hagger, 7 Sansom, 9 Farrer, 19 Hewlett, 21 Cameron, 25 Golland

Third Row standing, L-R:

1 Swann, 2 Wiggs, 3 Smith,GH, 4 Sansom,M? 5 Quin, 21 Phillips, 26 Brown.

Third row seated, 6th from right: possibly Herbert (younger brother of TORJ).

Nigel Wood has now filled in the gap between Phillips and Brown in the 3rd row standing as: 22 Craighead, 23 Wilson-Smith, 24 Jackson, 25 Clarke.

Gordon Hassell has identified his friend and 100 yard backstroke rival Ian MacBean at 6th from the right in the back row and says his father had a butcher's shop in Barnet High Street. He's not happy about the suggestion that TORJ Herbert's brother is in the 3rd row. He thinks he's 11th from the right in the back row. Nigel Wood confirms that one of TORJ's two brothers is indeed where Gordon says, but thinks that the other brother is 6th from the right in front row not the 3rd, where Derek suggests.*

David Jeavons has identified himself as the boy sitting directly in front of Poker. He says that to the left of him is Johnny Wintle. He also identifies the following:

BACK ROW, L-R:

3 Ross Kent, 15 Steve Matthews, 16 Johnny Bass.

ROW BEHIND POKER, from the right:

8 Peter Vokes, 10 David's brother Bill, 11 Eddie Owens.

FRONT ROW, 7th from right: Andy Deacon.

David agrees with Gordon Hassell that 11th from the right, Back Row, is Tony Herbert (now deceased) with his twin brother 6th from the right, front row, as Nigel says.* He thinks that Larry Girling is either 4th from the left in the row behind Poker.

*Derek has since acknowledged that TORJ's younger brother is 6th from right in the front row. Following Bernie Pinnock's example, he says he was 'just testing' !

Martin Reeves offers the following further names:

FRONT ROW:

Extreme right, Jim Bullingham. 3rd from right, Tony Pettitt. 4th from right, Ian Johnson. 5th from right, Honeybone (junior). 10th from right, Croft (junior) and 3rd from left, Langley.

BACK ROW:

3rd from right, Larry Girling. 11th from left, Eggington and 14th from left, Croft (median?).

ROW OF 6 CROUCHING (in front of Poker & Dilley):

Extreme right, Spriggs. 3rd from right, with part of his face obscured, Sadgrove. Martin himself is on the extreme left, next to Johnny Wintle.

Jas Cowen has added two more names: SEATED 2ND ROW: 2nd from left - John Bentley; 2nd from right - Ron Pullen.

Martyn Day has identified the boy standing 12th from right, 2nd row down, as Peter Riddell Royston.

Alan Ayers has identified the following: FRONT ROW: 1st from left, Paul Donovan. 3rd, Mick Langley. 7th, himself. 11th, Ray Jack. 13th, Croft.

John Symons has identified himself as the person 7th from the right in the row 2ND FROM THE BACK and says that 9th from the right in that row is Mike Cottrell (not the Stapfield contributor). He also says that 7th and 8th from the right in the BACK ROW are Richard Ware and Dave Rixon.

Summary of all the info above
(augmented version of John Bibby's original summary)

John has labelled the rows A to E from back to front, D being the small 6-person row of kneelers just in front of Poker and Rastus, who are in row C.

He has split rows A-C and E into left and right halves, and labelled them AL, AR, BL, BR, etc. AL3 is therefore the 3rd from the left of row A, and BR7 is the 7th from the right of row B, etc.

*John observes that the Quin/Larry (BL5) is a case of dual identity but says that he knew Quin quite well, through the Barnet High Street Methodist Church. He lived near Peter and John Connor. Quin, he feels, was shorter than the Quin/Larry in the photo but admits he could be wrong.
