Ian Sadler kindly sent this in. When he started at QE the school outfitter was 'Stevens' in the high street,
opposite the church. This stopped in 1953 when the school started to sell its own
clothing, sports kit etc. The badge shown here is from one of the first blazers the school sold. Ian thinks the earlier badge was monochrome silver on navy blue, bought as a 3" x 4" rectangle that had to be sewn on the blazer.
Ian recalls that although a blazer wasn't compulsory (a tweed type jacket was also
acceptable) almost all the lads had one at the start. He remembers one
morning when a new first-former arrived in
assembly with no jacket, just a grey long sleeved pullover. None of the
staff or the prefects said anything but about every other lad in the
school went up to him and asked him his name (Hawkins). Ian says Hawkins
always had a jacket after that.
