ONLINE MUSEUM: School reports, 1950s style
These three school reports were kindly sent by Stephen Giles, Ian Sadler and Nigel Wood. They represent three stages of QE schooldays - end of the very first term in the case of Stephen, about half-way through (Nigel) and the last year (Ian). In my last couple of terms at the school my reports were so bad that I 'lost' them on the way home - and my parents appeared to believe it, probably because I was always losing things !
Stephen recently found a bundle of his reports and says that this (above), the first of them, is the only one with no bad comments!
Ian says this about his report (above):
" When you reached the sixth form the report form was rather
different. No marks or places were given and usually there was much
more written in the boxes. In this case the masters were Hayes
(Physics), Ambidge (Chemistry), Deeprose (Mathematics), Ken Carter
(French), Davies (English). I always found it amusing that French was
deleted from the large panel and entered separately at the bottom. This was Hayes' first year at the school and Ambidge's third, Deeprose
had been there since 1954 but moved elsewhere that summer. Davies was
only at QE for a year but I remember him playing the flute in the school
orchestra - he played oboe part as John Kolbert had been the flautist
since 1951. As you see from the red ink Jenkins wanted me to stay a
further year to try for Oxbridge but two years in the sixth and one in
the seventh was enough and I had a place at London anyway. "
Nigel says this about his report:"Some of the comments are quite amusing. For example there was no ill luck involved in my history performance - I simply never did a stroke of work in history, as far as I can remember. On the other hand I did try quite hard in Chemistry, but never managed to get into Mr Ambidge's good books.
