Soon after I started at the school in the mid-50s, we were lectured (can't remember by whom) on the undesirability of taking any interest in football. It was, we were told, suitable for the common oaf, but not for us, the cream of society (yes, he actually used that phrase). I was therefore somewhat surprised to receive this photo from
Derek White, who explains that it comes from a Sunday morning kick-around by sixth formers. Says Derek: "Sometimes we played in House or Form teams and also against the local team, Fairfield United. I recall Tommy Docherty - ex Celtic, Preston, Arsenal and Chelsea, who was coaching/training Barnet, walking past with the Barnet team on their way for a jog and calling over to us in a broad Scots accent 'hai ye nae got a gime today lads?' "
The grandstand of Barnet FC is visible in the background, and the houses to the right are in Grasvenor Avenue.
