Winkie taught Latin, or rather pretended to. In reality he spent a lot of the classroom time writing his war memoirs (published as The Only Way Out) or telling us about his battlefield experiences. Unlike most of the other masters, he took a liking to me and was guilty of blatant favoritism. I think he sensed that I greatly admired him for his humorous brand of cynicism. As a result I shone in Latin - my only strong subject. I still find it useful.
