This photograph, one of two kindly supplied by
Martyn Day, was taken at a Youth Club in Goffs Oak, Herts, in 1959 or 1960. The two guitarists are Guy Hewlett who was also at Q.E and Martyn himself on the right. The drummer is unknown and on the extreme left of the photograph is the arm of the bass player,
Johnny Macbeth! In fact Martyn wonders if you QE guitar freaks he used to hang around with are as sharp as you were, and challenges you to identify the instrument that disembodied Macbeth arm is playing? No conferring!
Martyn says he has often wondered what happened to Guy but now Guy has found this site and become a contributor. Martyn doesn't know who the girl on the right is, but thinks she was probably telling them to tone it down a bit. He adds that
members of the Q.E guitar
fraternity will recognise the amplifier in bottom left as a Watkins
Dominator - 17 watts of raw power! Purists will also notice that they are all
playing the chord of D!
Martyn recalls that they couldn't settle on a name for themselves, so were simply introduced as "A Visiting Rhythm Group." The only thing they agreed on was to roll their shirt sleeves up! It was an OE, Tony Lyon, who booked them into this, their first and last gig.
However, things turned out very differently for the lead singer pictured here. He's
Tommy Moeller who went on to write
Concrete and Clay for Unit 4+2 shortly after leaving school.
[Sorry - I've given up trying to provide links to Concrete & Clay. The videos are removed from YouTube etc almost as soon as I do that].
