[Re reply 20]. I'm another cynic in this regard (as in many others) but I wouldn't blame QE for using an alumni database in this way. We can always say 'no' (if we don't fancy saying 'yes'. (In the same way, I don't blame representatives of religions for calling once in a while and trying to convert me. Believing what they do, they would be doing wrong by not trying.)

In some respects, Adam and Nigel, I share your apprehension as I often get cash appeals sent from both Cambridge University and my old college Sidney Sussex but I think that the school does seem genuine in this instance and, as Nigel says, you can say no if I am wrong.

CONNECTION WITH QE: pupil 1955-60

Both reply 5 and this document [pdf file] in the museum section of the website have confirmed something that my father had mentioned: Ernest Jenkins was a teacher at the Grocers School in Hackney (a.k.a. Hackney Downs School) before moving to QE in 1930. My father (and his three brothers) had all been pupils at the Grocers School in the 1920s. So Mr J had taught two generations of Hoffmans, probably without him realising the link. The first 11 replies of this thread are about EHJ and there are a couple of other coincidences to be found among them.
