[Re replies 19 & 20]. Pure speculation on my part, but I wonder if, towards the end of his reign, EHJ was capable of remembering recently-presented data, such as names of pupils. He seems to me to have aged prematurely, though this impression may owe too much to his deafness. I recall one visitation he made to a lesson, probably to observe a new teacher. He sat at an empty desk in front of me - that is near the back of the room - and, much to my delight, plonked on the desk a box outwardly resembling a crystal set from the 1920s. It was a hearing aid.

The recent resumption of this thread after after a gap of about seven months has reminded me of something I meant to report in connection with replies 13-16. Chris Shurety (correct spelling) contacted me privately in May about his experiences at the school. I pointed him to this thread and he said he was thinking of submitting a reply. I'm sure Jas and Nigel would love to hear from you, Chris!

As regards the 22nd reply I hope Chris Shurety will submit a reply, as it does not require a task comparable to the labours of Hercules to do so. That will mean one more from the 1956 1b class to go along with myself, Seton Bennett (now deceased) and Ray Sloss. Perhaps you might remind him again, Vic, about his unfulfilled intention to reply. You may be able gently to nudge him to get some action. In regard to the 18th reply it is good, Hugh, that you remember 30 names from 1b of 1955. That is probably the full complement, as forms were meant to have 30 pupils, though I suppose sometimes it varied a bit with pupils repeating a year, like Amos did amongst others. I am surprised given the repeating daily of the register that most would not remember the names. Elsewhere on the site Seton Bennett and I tried to list our 30. A couple you mention of the 1b class of 1955 I have seen recently at OE Annual Dinners - Tarry and Wormald, both prominent sportsmen and from my House i.e. Harrisons. Bastick, also of Harrisons, taught me how to excel at cross-country and I became the house captain of the team. Beeny, also of Harrisons, was a close friend throughout the years, as was his sister. I can find only one contribution by Seton on this site, Jas, in which he merely offered to list the boys in 1b in 1955, should anyone be interested. Your own attempt was made over three years later (when you were at last able to access the library-blocked Thread 32) in reply 32/143.

You are right, Vic, of course about Seton's list [see green footnote above]. He did not actually submit it but was he said he was very ready to do so. I asked him to correct mine, if wrong, but no further entry from Seton came. I got most right but there was some amendment from Ray Sloss and maybe others. I wonder how all the class are getting on now and how many are still alive. None would appear to come to Founders Day, OE Annual Dinners or Forty Club lunches. Maybe some will appear at these or on this site in future, though the probabilities remain low. At the last Founders Day I talked with Underwood, who was in Broughton House and a year above me. He lives in the Barnet area but had not been to the Founders Day events even though the fete on Stapylton Field is well advertised locally. As we were in the OE Museum (part of the old Library) he asked me what library facilities the school had now and I was able to enlighten him. I still keep in touch with Tim Fawdry (ex Underne House) and have visited him and his wife Anthea at their home in Ilkley in Yorkshire. He like me has had a hip replacement operation and enjoys walking in the Dales.
