NAME: James (Jas) Cowen Then & NowAs a result of the recent Nigerian election Mr Goodluck Jonathon is to be replaced as President by Mr Muhammadu Bahan. I hope that this will not mean hearing a lot less of Mr Goodluck. Every time I hear the name it does make me smile, even if the tragic situations in Nigeria are not at all amusing. Another name that always cheers me up when she appears reporting on news is the BBC's chief correspondent Lyse Doucet OBE. Doucet seems such a charming surname and she has a sister Andrea Doucet. The Christian name of Lyse added makes it absolutely marvellous. Do others enjoy similar names?

NAME: James (Jas) Cowen Then & NowI have enjoyed the TV Lottery adverts with different people of infamous reputations saying "There are 2 chances to be a millionaire now. Don't let it be them." One of them is Piers Morgan. I have always wondered why parents choose a medieval famed version of this name rather than Peter, the more usual form. The Chairman of the QE Governors Barrie Martin has a son, an OE, also with the name Piers. Maybe others too are intrigued by some other names given to children. My nephew has one child called Nate and another Jace and one of my children has called their daughter Evie-Mae Chick. It is a different world out there today, I think.

NAME: James (Jas) Cowen Then & NowIn connection with my last reply I was chatting with Barrie Martin at the recent OE Annual Dinner and I asked him why he and his wife named his children Piers and Giles. He said there was nothing really profound in the choice but they wanted names that would not be shortened by others. Incidentally I liked the photo of his attending the Palace for his MBE with his wife and children, which is in the display case by the school entrance, along with photos of students who have been distinguished in various activities.
