Yet another widely shared 'outside interest' has emerged - sport. It had begun to be prominent in
Thread 147, so I thought another new 'restricted topic' thread would be in order. Please read the the relevant replies in Thread 147 first, to avoid repeating their content in W11. You can still respond to replies in 147, but if the subject is connected with sport your reply will appear in this thread instead, with a link back to 147.
RESTRICTED THREAD: please make sport the main subject of your reply.

Ken Pegden is not alone in having Woverhampton Wanderers as one of his great loves
[see Thread 147, reply 14] I have been a fan since primary school and although getting to matches is more difficult these days, with ticketing restrictions, I try to see at least one match a season. This year it was last month at Brentford. Next year it is likely to be Watford where I am hoping to use my contacts to get a seat in the directors box.

I have read Derek Scudder's love of the Mighty Wolves
[see above] and his thoughts of visiting Watford next season. Like Derek I usually get one or two trips to Molineux a season. But my son and second granddaughter (10yrs) are fervent Watford fans so the banter is great. Hopefully trips to home and away games Wolves v Watford will resume next season. Three years ago I had an invitation from my idol Bert Williams to visit him at his home and we spent some 3 hours talking "footie" - fantastic time.

Congrats to you Wolves fans on the promotion from Div 1 to Championship this year. Maybe they will follow in the footsteps of Southampton, whom I follow, with two successive promotions. Southampton have suffered in results lately but of course are still 8th in the Premiership. I am glad Nigel Adkins got another job with Reading. My nephew Philip and his best man at his wedding are Wolves and WBA fans respectively, a hang over from their university days, so he too will be pleased.

If you'll forgive a bit of name-dropping, the reference to Tommy Docherty in the caption of the 1961
football photo reminded me that, in the early to mid 1960s, when he was manager of Chelsea, he lived in my road in Cockfosters - next door in fact to the Farrer family, of QE fame. George Eastham, who transferred to Arsenal from Newcastle Utd after a legal battle, lived just round the corner and took my autograph book (and those of 3 friends) to Chile with him for the 1962 World Cup. In addition to the
England squad he obtained the signatures of the Hungarian team which included the great Ferenc Puskas.. The Arsenal coach Les Shannon also lived nearby. I knew his son at my primary school and went with him to Highbury on a match day where I met Billy Wright (manager) in his office and later had tea with a number of whom we - well, others anyway - would now call WAGs. These included the wife of Joe Baker, who had returned to British football after a spell, rare for those days, with Torino. Billy Wright lived in Lyonsdown Road, New Barnet (fairly close to EHJ Towers) and was married to
Joy Beverley. As it transpired, their house was directly opposite that in which my wife was spending her first six years.

Certainly, Nick, there is a lot of name dropping there but I for one say "Let's forgive the man." I always like to hear about encounters with celebrities, though relying on the
Daily Mail for gossip rather than those magazines such as
OK (which I read when left about as free copies only). I related elsewhere being in a café in London Oxford St area when Andrew Lloyd Webber came in with three others and sat on the adjoining table. An interesting bit of overheard conversation there! I remember two occasions when Arsenal soccer players came in to cafés where I was enjoying lunch. On one occasion Tony Adams (the Arsenal donkey) came in with some mates. On another occasion Pat Rice came in with some others. My dad would have liked to be there for the Arsenal men as he went to Highbury to support the Gunners in his youth. He always called them Woolwich Arsenal and listened out for their results. It wasn't always 1-0 to the Arsenal but frequently was.

Re the last part of your
reply 46 in Thread 108, Nick, I agree with you about the BBC showing the Women's event and the Isis/Goldie match or certainly the highlights/most of them. I too would prefer this rather than too much twittering on. At least in the Aintree Grand National meeting they do show the other races. Of course there are many who like the build up of a wait like those who were by the Thames on boat race day or those in Andover on Sunday who waited ages in the rain for the Sunday St George's Procession. I am sure there were many besides the families of the marchers. For European Champions League I only turn on when the games actually begin. Similarly with the Motor Racing Grand Prix events. Again are we the minority or the majority?

I give my best wishes to you fans of Wolves and also to Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest fans for the results so far this season. I hope you in turn will congratulate the progress of Southampton so far this season in the Premiership. Currently the second place deserves praise and exceeds the 8th of last season, though how long it will be maintained is debateable. We will have to wait and see and all will be revealed, as my father-in-law so often said. This is of course after losing some of last year's key players to Liverpool and elsewhere and the manager to Spurs. Many felt the new manager and the players he has got now would do a fine job and so it has proved so far and hopefully these won't be lost from Southampton too. In regard to non-league Salisbury there is a much more sad tale and the local Salisbury paper has been relaying the whole sorry facts for many weeks.

Congratulations to Barnet FC for doing so well in their league at the Hive, being currently in 1st place. I know you OEs who go to support them still such as Alan Solomon and Paul Douglas will be delighted. Salisbury FC, who were in the same league before financial problems saw them leave, have seen some progress too. A new consortium has been formed to make application for them to get in some league next year with Steve Claridge, the TV commentator on the Football League, acting as Football Manager. As for Southampton in the Premier League the wheels have fallen off a bit over the last three matches. It was not at all inevitable they would lose to Man City, Man Utd and Arsenal. They almost survived against the last two. I hope the next few matches will see a change for the better and not a slide as happens with so many clubs. Do you hear me, Wolves and Nottingham Forest? Newcastle and West Ham have turned about, so come on Southampton! Lets be having you!

In congratulating Barnet in their leading the chief Vanarama Conference League I should also congratulate Borehamwood, who lead the Conference South. The possibility of their being in the same league together, however, is of course avoided if they both get promotion (Barnet to League 2 and Borehamwood to the main Conference.) It is of course early days and I really do not want either to be jinxed by my comments. I do not of course know whether any OEs or current QE students cheer on Borehamwood like they still do Barnet. To change the subject, I am glad to see Southampton were not so jinxed and after their 5 match defeat run, I am glad to see their 3-0 defeat of Everton keeps them 5th in the Premiership.

With the current 3rd round of the FA Cup I have really enjoyed seeing those classic games of the past when the underdog won against higher opposition. One of them was the famous victory of holders Man Utd by Bournemouth FC in Jan 1984 under their then manager Harry Redknapp. Now in the league Bournemouth are again riding high after all their troubles over recent years with their gifted manager Mr Howe. Could they even get in to the Premiership? Early days I know with all the ups and downs of soccer. This was again illustrated in the cup this year with the result Rotherham 1 Bournemouth 5, whereas Harry's current premiership side QPR lost so easily to Sheffield Utd, who are such a good cup side under their manager Nigel Clough.

I am glad Southampton FC have got their revenge in beating both Arsenal and Man U in the reverse fixtures and have now pushed up to 3rd in the Premiership behind Chelsea and Man City. I continue to be bombarded with news on my
Facebook account and am beginning to wonder if it is all a little too much. I am certainly not going to add any more clubs as Facebook continues to prompt me to do. I am glad however to see Bournemouth, Barnet and Boreham Wood continue to flourish.

Alas for both Southampton FC and Bournemouth FC - knocked out of the FA cup 4th round but of course Chelsea, Man City and Spurs are out too and Man U and Liverpool have still to win! What a memorable weekend of soccer it was! It was entertaining for us armchair soccer watchers, though a bit sad that whole games shown on main channel TV are such disappointing spectacles compared with other games.

I appear to be a lone voice ploughing a lonely furrow (to add a metaphor to the thread) on the theme of football clubs and their progress or not. Nigel Wood comments
elsewhere why he does not reply on the subject. I will now retire, at least for a while, from the theme. Perhaps thoughts on other sports, however, may add further interest and evoke some replies. I am a little surprised that 'The Jump', relating to competitors taking part in various winter sports categories, is back, given the extent of injuries from the last series and pre this one before it is even broadcast. Ola Jordan has been injured I understand. Still it is no more frightening I suppose than my early and indeed later days on the ski slopes. I looked at one slope in my early days of skiing and wondered how I would possibly get down it. Surpise! Surprise! A few days later I managed to get down it rather well.
The thread wasn't meant to be exclusively about football, in any case. Perhaps your introduction of another sport (skiing) will stir things up a bit!

Well the first episode of the latest series of
The Jump has now started on Channel 4. I am glad for Dom Parker of
Gogglebox fame that he has been eliminated in the 1st round along with Phil Tufnell. Of course I expect Dom's wife Steph is really pleased that her husband does not have to endure any more frightening perils. Rather them all than me going down on the Skeleton whilst dear Graham Bell the skier and Amy Williams, the Skeleton medal winner, show not too much true encouragement and sympathy for their possible plight. They all may have shot off the track if they did not injure themselves by letting go, or crashed like Phil did to some degree on the practice run. Last year one did break their fingers from it. The Ski Jump appears somewhat tame in comparison, though frightening enough for some.

Is there anyone out there looking at the site who is interested in commenting or participating in winter sports or about
The Jump TV programme or are interested in my making comments on such or indeed talking about other sports? I could talk at length but prefer some sort of dialogue to a monologue. Whatever! I would, though at least like to compliment Joey Essex at winning the competition and beating the favourite (Mike Tindall, husband of Zara Phillips that was). Well done! Chloe Madeley also did amazingly, especially for one who had not been on skis before. Well done also! They both did so well, especially considering some others had been on skis so much in the past.

[Reply to W7/16 - last sentence]. I can still remember being on the receiving end of Rob Hungate's extremely fast bowling, which would have struck terror into many a batsman!!

In my opinion all extremely fast bowling in cricket should be banned, especially in the light of the fatality in Australia recently.

Scenes at the end of the FA Quarter Final match between Aston Villa and West Brom brought back memories of the 1966 World Cup Final and the famous quote "They think it's all over. It is now." There were of course moments to go before the final whistle when the first fans went on but am I the only one who sympathises with the poor Aston Villa fans, who have suffered so much and at last have a new manager? There are of course no sane excuses for the ripping up of seats and hurling them by some West Brom fans despite their disappointment. It was quite a scene at the proper end of the match and when the final whistle was blown. All those fans on the pitch! I hope the probable fine is not too much.

It has been a sad period for English supporters of the cricket squad in Australia but I have been glad to cheer in a patriotic way for the tennis against USA in the Davis Cup world group in Scotland and for the successes in the indoor European athletics meeting. I am glad to see Barnet continue to prosper at football in the Vanarama Conference and Borehamwood in the Southern Section.

For all you Barnet Football Club fans and I know of certain OEs, who are in that number and go to watch them at the Hive, congratulations for that promotion to Division 2 of the League from the Conference Premier. Congratulations also to those who go to support Watford FC in their promotion from Division 1 to the Premiership. Down near here of course there is great rejoicing over Bournemouth FC's achievements also.
