ORIGINAL MESSAGE

NAME: David Jeavons

DATE: 23 November 2013

CONNECTION WITH QE: Pupil 1959 to 1966

Reference the Underne House photo, it says 1960 or 61 but I feel it may be a bit later, say 62? Anyway, some more identification. That's myself sat directly in front of Poker with Johnny Wintle to my right with FA Cup ears. 3rd from the left Back Row is Ross Kent and 15th and 16th in the same row are Steve Matthews and Johnny Bass. 4th from left 2nd row down Larry Girling? I agree with Gordon Hassell that 11th from the right, Back Row, is Tony Herbert (now deceased) with his twin brother 6th from the right, front row. 3rd from the right, back row, Larry Girling? One of them is him! 8th from the right, 2nd row down, Peter Vokes. 10th and 11th from the right, same row, my brother Bill Jeavons (sadly deceased) and Eddie Owens. 7th from the right bottom row is Andy Deacon.

Regarding the Stapylton photo 1960: 2nd row from front, seated L to R, 9th, 10th & 11th are Rick Bayman, Brian Freshwater & Chris Opperman. Front Row, seated R to L, 9th is Roger Edrupt

NOTE FROM VIC: Many thanks, David. As you will see, I've now updated the caption accordingly.

Fascinating! Thank you, David. Johnny Wintle is to the left of you as we look at the picture? I believe he lived in Lime Grove, Totteridge Village. Someone told me he was the son of the (then) famous soldier and eccentric, Colonel Wintle, but I've no idea if this is true or not.

Hi Nigel. Yes that's right, to my right (left as you look at it). Unfortunately, Johnny lived in a flat in Mill Hill and was the son of a jeweller, I believe, so I can't corroborate your Colonel Wintle story. He was always in trouble at school, like my goodself!

Thank you, David. That pretty much knocks the Colonel Wintle story on the head; the Colonel was hardly the type to have had a second career as a jeweller! And as for Lime Grove - where did that come from? Presumably someone else I knew lived there. We shall never know. Not down to my advancing years: I've held these false beliefs for over 50 years - or I think I have ...

I was glad to see you, David, along with the other newcomers at the last 40 club dinner. After going to the last 3 and the last 2 Annual Dinners I am beginning to be taken as a regular and not the new kid on the block. At the annual one I caught up with Peter Vokes. He was in Underne from my year 1956 in form 1c and also attended the 40 club dinner. Of course your elder brother was in my form 1b in 1956. I am reasonably tall but I remember him being a fair way taller than me and also a more sporty type in cricket and rugger. I remember the real troublesome lads in 1b were Paget and Edwards, the Small and Tall of our day. Perhaps a thread could be started for mischief anecdotes or added to an existing one. Paget's elder brother is a frequent attendee at OE dos along with Gerry Golland of my year. Paget senior says his brother has not been seen often by him lately. I enjoy talking with him about cross-country running for the school and elsewhere.

Regarding the Stapylton House photo c.1960 [see Original Message] , fifth from the left in the centre row is my brother, Martin Joslin (a.k.a. Moon, or so I'm told). Martin passed away in 1962.

NOTE FROM VIC: Thanks, Alan. I've now updated the caption accordingly.

Regarding David's uncertainty about the date of the Underne House photo [see Original Message], it is 1961 or earlier. I can be categorical about that. I left the school at the same time as a certain EHJ - Summer 1961.

Well hello Alan! [reply 5]. Only 60 years since our respective families occupied each half of a semi at 48/50 Monkfrith Way Southgate! I can still vividly remember the sadness felt by everyone up and down the street when your brother was taken ill - leukaemia as I recall. I have some happier memories too: your father George was a salesman for Maynards sweets and there were always 'samples' available! In those days neighbours were also friends and I can remember our respective parents chatting 'over the fence' or borrowing each other's lawn mower - hopefully that spirit still pertains although somehow, I doubt it.

I go with Mike Hagger [reply 6] and think the Underne House photo dates from 1961. I offer the following additional names, some given with more confidence than others. FRONT ROW: Extreme right- Jim Bullingham. 3rd from right- Tony Pettitt. 4th from right- Ian Johnson. 5th from right- Honeybone (junior). 10th from right- Croft (junior) and 3rd from left-Langley. Back row:- 3rd from right-Larry Girling. 11th from left- Eggington and 14th from left- Croft (median?) There is a row of six crouching boys in front of Pearce and Dilley. On the extreme right of this row is Spriggs. 3rd from right, with part of his face obscured is Sadgrove. I am on the extreme left next to Johnny Wintle.

Here's another name to add to that Underne Photograph from 1961. Standing 12th from right, 2nd row down is Peter Riddell Royston from Brookmans Park. He was an enthusiastic member of the Potters Bar Sea Cadets which, if I remember correctly, was run by a surviving member of the legendary Cockleshell Heroes raid against German shipping in Bordeaux harbour.

NOTE FROM VIC: Jas Cowen has also just added a couple of names to the photo - John Bentley and Ron Pullen.
